Love the one (company) you’re with

1 12 2010

Are you happy where you find yourself now? Work-wise, I mean?

I couldn’t have asked for a better company to spend my internship at. The people are lovely, we have a great working environment, everyone works hard (but manages to have a laugh most days), and team spirit is something that is definitely in the air.

That said, there are many activities/ initiatives that have taken place since I got here mid-July, and many of them have been for good causes – even if it’s only to spread a bit of ‘cheer’.

We celebrated Christmas in July; did walks for Blisters for Bread; helped to paint on Mandela day; and had one of our staff on Noot vir Noot. At the Sefika Awards, we were ‘crowned’ the Educational and Academic Publisher of the year. One of the guys here received the SABA award for Rep of the Year.

We raised money for CANSA by having a Slipper & Muffin Day; showed team spirit with an in-house pool (the kind with balls, not swimming) competition, and ‘had it out’ with Cambridge University Press at our annual Dragonboat Race – we won for best team spirit, as well as the race (though Cambridge was awarded best dressed).

Baby showers/ stork parties had me buying cute little itty-bitty awww-inducing socks, bibs and blankies. On Wellnesss Day we could have massages, vitamin B shots and cholesterol and blood pressure tests (among other things). Plus, to ‘celebrate’ Movember – the month previously known as November – some of the men here took part in the Mo Man competition to see whose moustache could grow the most (or look the most impressive).

[Aside: for those of you who don’t know, Movember is a moustache growing charity event held during November each year that raises funds and awareness for men’s health.]

All of this… and I only got here in mid-July!!

This coming Friday, our year-end function will be held at a snazzy hotel, and for ‘A Night at the Oscars’, eveningwear is a must… Not that I am attending. Contract staff (and I’m not even contract staff, as I am ‘employed’ by PASA) aren’t allowed to bring a partner, and there is no way I am going without my Significant Other. That wouldn’t be any fun.

In any case, there’s an overview of the fantastic company I refer to ask my workplace. Fun-loving, serious, motivated, driven, taking others into account, understanding, no-nonsense (at times), and dedicated to bringing quality educational and academic products to the market.

So, all of that said: how is your company looking now?! 😉
