Live Love Laugh

19 06 2012

It’s been long overdue, but I can finally share a photo of the actual gift I got my Significant Other for our one year wedding anniversary.

You may remember how I made a word cloud outlining our first year of marriage, or how I stuck about forty “I love…” post-it notes on a cupboard door in the shape of a heart. To stick with the traditional paper gifts, I bought a large frame, selected some photos of us from the past year, and printed them on photo paper… which I could only do after we received the new printer nozzle tingy because the old one wasn’t working… but it all worked out in the end.

[Note: I’ll apologize in advance for  both the quality of the photo and the angle at which it was taken – it was late in the afternoon, and the corridor doesn’t get much light, so I had to use the flash on my cell phone. Better pic to follow soon!]

I know some of you may think the ‘Live Love Laugh’ thing is a bit cheesy and overused, yet I suppose it epitomizes what one can do and hope for to have a happy life. Nobody ever said life was going to be easy (cue more clichés!) All we can do is live as best we can, love and care for others (and ourselves!) and try to look on the lighter side of things, as well… Besides, my Significant Other and I laugh at ourselves a lot because we’re so silly, and that makes the frame’s sentiments even more fitting…

…that, and the fact that Smudgy doesn’t look overly impressed in the photo directly underneath the word ‘Laugh’, making me want to have a small chuckle even more 😉

Okay, enough with the seriousness and pseudo-lecturing and back to my madcap, obsessive-compulsive, cat-loving and slightly pessimistic self *mumble mumble*

Have a tremendously terrific Tuesday, everyone!

Smudgy the cat loves… (Part 2)

18 06 2012

Good morning, dearest blog readers!

It’s nice and cold here in South Africa, and with the weather being what it is, I thought it’d be the perfect opportunity to do the second instalment in the Smudgy the cat loves… ‘series’… which, I know, is long overdue.

So, what else does my feline fur-baby love? Cuddling!

Smudgy isn’t really what you would call an affectionate cat. I know that she loves me, as much as a cat can be said to love a human, but many (if not most) times she casts this into serious doubt. She prefers being outdoors, doesn’t like being held for too long, won’t sit in your lap when you want her to, claws or bites me at random, and only seems happy to see me when I get home in the afternoons because her food  bowl is ‘empty’. Still, we have our own little rituals, and I think when it comes to the dreary weather that personifies winter, she’s far more likely to act like a loving little thing.

That said, I will admit that she’s very intuitive. When I have to take home work in the evenings, she always comes to sit with me (or, rather, on my work). She seems to know when I need a bit of companionship, or a cuddle, and I am more than happy to oblige!

She was nowhere to be found when I was in bed with a migraine on Friday, but I won’t hold that against her 😉

Here are some photos of Smudgy indulging in some cuddling with me. Nothing says happiness like a warm kitty in your lap/by your side/stealing your pillow…

Snuggling into the crook of my arm while I read

Stretching on the couch

Holding onto my arm to snugly secure herself

Many times I think Smudgy prefers my Significant Other…

Taking a quick catnap – aren’t we adorable?

Stealing my pillow pre-cuddle – and I let her keep it! She sure gets away with a lot

More interested in cozying up next to me than watching Mythbusters

Taking a nap on my behalf after an aqua aerobics class. Just the thought of exercise makes Smudgy tired… not to mention all that water!

Cutest lap-cat EVER 🙂 Best way to stay warm on a cold night when a heating pad and mug of tea just won’t cut it.

Taking over my side of the bed last night. A cuddle session was inevitable. This is definitely one of my favourite photos of us.

A day (and year) to remember

7 05 2012

Happy Monday, blog readers!

Even if it’s not a happy one for you, at least it’s happy for me, because a year ago today (in approximately half an hour’s time, if you want to get technical), this happened:

That’s right – I got married.

There were a lot of things that weren’t perfect (with weddings, are they ever?) Naming but only a few: the sidepath of my hair was on the wrong side; the flowers weren’t 100% what I expected; it was an incredibly windy day; and I was 20 minutes late! I know the bride is allowed to be late, but I’m a punctual person, and I don’t really do late. I just comfort myself in the fact that I was actually ready to go, and that the other people in the bridal party were still busy doing their hair/make-up and having their pictures taken… 😉

It’s been a great year filled with love, laughter, happiness and all the other things that couples go through (it’s not always sparkly nyancat rainbows and the like, after all). And yes, I’m thankful. It’s wonderful being married to someone I can be silly with, who genuinely wants to know how my day’s been, who won’t let me get out of the car until we’ve shared a kiss, who playfully teases me when I cry during movies or tv shows (believe me, I can cry at the smallest thing!), who “tolerates” my cooking… and who hasn’t murdered the cat yet because he secretely loves her.

We spent the weekend in a guest house just outside Robertson and had a lovely time. We dined at Mo & Rose and had the most amazing food ever!! I might share some photos of our dining experience with you tomorrow. Tonight we’re going to Balducci’s, and I’m really looking forward to trying their cuisine… I’ll probably just have to find something more appealing to wear than my current attire: black jeans & a green jersey.

Although I have yet to complete the gift I bought my Significant Other, I had a little ‘side project’ I was working on, and after he dropped me off at work this morning, he went home to discover this against one of the cupboards in our study:

That’s right: 40 post-it love notes! I started each one with “I love” and took it from there. It’s the thought that counts after all, right? Plus it’s not like I could list everything I love and appreciate about him – the cupboard would have become pretty full, and I might have ended up sounding clichéd. At least I knew that a few of these would ellicit some chuckles – and being able to laugh & reminisce is something wonderful to me.

Thank you for an amazing year, Sweetheart – here’s to many more! I love you

Happy birthday, Addy!

19 04 2012

So today is an exceptionally special day…

…since my younger sister, Addy, is turning 21 (!!!) *sniff*

Addy, you know that being someone’s sister isn’t always easy (especially in our case, amirite?!), but you have to admit that it’s a LOT of fun too 😉

There’s so much I can say to you on what is deemed a momentous occasion, but I also don’t want you to get ’embarrassed’ or overwhelmed by my sentimentality, so I thought I’d lighten the general mood by having Basement Cat join in the celebrations:

On a more serious & soppy note, I just want to let you know that I think

Sure, you’re at university and have to go to your classes et cetera, but I still hope that the day is filled with fun, laughter, happiness, mischief, treats (read: gifts, flowers, chocolate, CAKE) and everything that someone as superb as yourself deserves Every. Single. Day. !!

In conclusion, all that I really want to say it this: ai Lovez you, me twinzee! *biiiiiiiig hug* Sad that I’m not with you, but I’ll see you on Saturday. xxxx

So I turned 25…

10 04 2012

I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter filled with love, laughter, happiness… and chocolate… or whatever 😉

Our weekend started off with a near-literal bang. My Significant Other’s car gave problems on Thursday, thus necessitating that (a) he take it in to be looked at, and (b) I work from home. Not the worst thing to happen… although we then found out they’d be ordering the new parts for his car after Easter weekend, and that the parts would only arrive on Thursday *huff*

But despite being carless for two days, a bit of family ‘drama’, borrowing my brother-in-law’s noisy little Golf from Saturday to Monday (and much, much more!), we managed to have a great weekend.

When it was just after midnight and ‘officially’ my birthday, Smudgy woke me up about 6 or 8 times. I think she was grumpy/frustrated that it was cold and wet outside and she didn’t know what to do about it since she obviously really wanted to be outside, but I’d like to think that she was being affectionate and excited about my birthday.

Here’s a basic rundown of my day: lemon & poppyseed muffin (sans candles, since my Significant Other couldn’t find any) plus a warm mug of tea in bed; a visit from my parentals and younger sister Addy, with gifts and a suprise; tea, cupcakes and gift opening; lunch at Ocean basket with my Significant Other, parentals and sis; curling up on the sofa under a blanket with my Significant Other and watching series; dinner at the Hildebrand (V&A Waterfront) – so fancy and romantic 😉

Exquisite orange roses from my Sweetheart

Lindt chocolate bunny! This little guy has been in the kitchen cupboard for a few weeks already

Pretty little forks to aid in the cosumption of treats

Smudgy was trying to escape/go outside when I snatched her up for a photo with her mommy

Addy baked birthday cupcakes! I had to assemble the stand myself - it was part of the 'fun'

Addy & the parentals baked me a super awesome Scooby-Doo birthday cake! 😀

All my gifts assembled on the livingroom table

Sushi for two: my Significant Other and I decided to share a Rising Sun sushi platter and added extra salmon roses & rainbow rolls. Mmm, sushi...

Such a happy couple! Ready to head out for dinner

Here Smudgy's more accepting of having her picture taken. She even struck a pose for the camera! Isn't she just the loveliest little thing?

Taking a nap on daddy's jeans after we arrived home ❤

PS: Did I mention that we went to watch THE HUNGER GAMES last night??! *happy dance*

A lifetime of love <3

4 04 2012

“Love? Above all things I believe in love. Love is like oxygen. Love is a many-splendored thing. Love lifts us up where we belong – all you need is love!” ~ Moulin Rouge

It’s a beautiful day outside. The sun is shining, there’s a cool yet refreshing bite to the air, and the leaves are starting to cover the pavements in all their autumn splendor. What makes this day even more special, is the fact that my parentals-in-law are celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary today!

Since my Significant Other and I started dating over four years ago, they have accepted me into their hearts as a daughter, adding joy both joy and love to my life. They have been caring, supportive, down-to-earth… the list goes on and on. Their marriage is proof that you can live happily ever after – as long as you nurture your love, grow together as a couple through shared experiences (and, yes, hardships), accept that you’ll have your differences, make honesty and communication a priority… In a nutshell: if you love someone so much that you are willing to make mutual sacrifices, don’t take one another for granted, and work to make it last.

Marriage is hard work, dedication and perseverance – just like anything else in life. There are so many people who get divorced nowadays that it’s nice to find a couple (or couples, rather, since my parentals will also have been married for 30 years come the middle of the year) who have stuck together for so long and whose love is evident for those around them. [Okay, soppy little mini-rant over now!!]

So, to ‘celebrate’ what can be deemed as a lifetime of love, here are some quotations about marriage that just might serve as some food for thought…

“A wedding anniversary is the celebration of love, trust, partnership, tolerance and tenacity. The order varies for any given year.” ~ Paul Sweeney

“A successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person.” ~ Mignon McLaughlin

“Love is a symbol of eternity. It wipes out all sense of time, destroying all memory of a beginning and all fear of an end.” ~Author Unknown

“Love one another and you will be happy. It’s as simple and as difficult as that.” ~Michael Leunig

“An anniversary is a time to celebrate the joys of today, the memories of yesterday, and the hopes of tomorrow.” ~ Author Unknown

“The highest happiness on earth is marriage.” ~ William Lyon Phelps

“Are we not like two volumes of one book?” ~ Marceline Desbordes-Valmore

“Love is not singular except in syllable.” ~ Marvin Taylor

“A happy marriage is a long conversation that always seems too short.” ~Andre Maurois

“There is no more lovely, friendly and charming relationship, communion or company than a good marriage”. ~ Martin Luther

“Chains do not hold a marriage together. It is threads, hundreds of tiny threads, which sew people together through the years”. ~ Simone Signoret

“One man by himself is nothing. Two people who belong together make a world”. ~ Han Margolius

“The secret of a happy marriage remains a secret”. ~ Henry Youngman

“The secret to having a good marriage is to understand that marriage must be total, it must be permanent and it must be equal”. ~ Frank Pittman

“Married couples who love each other tell each other a thousand things without talking.” ~ Chinese Proverb

“Oh, the comfort, the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person, having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but pouring them all out, just as they are, chaff and grain together, certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping, and with a breath of kindness blow the rest away.” ~ Dinah Craik

Gifts for a cat lover

28 03 2012

Morning, blog readers!

So I ‘survived’ my first day back in the office yesterday by reading the last third of the novel I was busy with plus two thirds of another novel (and I don’t feel guilty about it… not really…) It looks like today is going to be pretty much the same. There isn’t much for me to do besides archiving, which I am definitely not in the mood for.

Other than that, I’ve been thinking about how quickly the year is going by. I mean, it’s the end of March already. I’m at the end of my fixed term contract at work. Soon by younger sister will be turning 21. Doesn’t it feel like we were just celebrating Christmas yesterday? Or like I got married & went to Scotland a few days ago?? I don’t think time flies by any more – I think every year, the speed increases so much that, not too long from now, we’ll be reaching warp speed or something… Perhaps I am having weird mid-twenties delusions, instead of a ‘crisis’ – I sound a bit crazy even to myself!

Anyway. Next week is going to be a busy one: my parentals-in-law’s 30th wedding anniversary; Pesach; my father-in-law’s birthday; my ‘cousin’s’ birthday… oh, and my (25th) birthday, of course. On Easter Sunday. Don’t I just feel special.

So, in ‘anticipation’ of another increment (which doesn’t really matter to me anyway, nothing special, but protocol dictates I at least portray an outward air of excitement), here are some gifts that a self-proclaimed cat lover would find *cue terrible pun* absolutely purrrfect.

Enjoy the pics, and happy Hump-Day!

No cats were harmed in the making of these treats

This dancing kitty would distract me from 'normal' life for hours... if I had an iPhone

Doctor Tinycat to the rescue!

I love kitties, AND tea, AND cookies - this ring is a WIN

Hypnocat says you must love the cute

If there's space for my cell phone & keys, I'll take it 😉

These would make super wedding rings... though I don't think my Significant Other would EVER agree to wear one!

Some days you're good, some days you're evil. Show your mood with a Longcat or Tacgnol scarf. Who hasn't ever wished they could wrap their warm, soft kitty around their neck? ...even if it sounds creepy/inhumane...

Nyan nyan nyan nyan nyan nyan nyan nyan nyan

Face it: girls who wear glasses can be smart, sassy & cute (not sure whether I fall into any of those categories, though). Forget hipsters and their faux coolness
