Smudgy the cat loves… (Part 2)

18 06 2012

Good morning, dearest blog readers!

It’s nice and cold here in South Africa, and with the weather being what it is, I thought it’d be the perfect opportunity to do the second instalment in the Smudgy the cat loves… ‘series’… which, I know, is long overdue.

So, what else does my feline fur-baby love? Cuddling!

Smudgy isn’t really what you would call an affectionate cat. I know that she loves me, as much as a cat can be said to love a human, but many (if not most) times she casts this into serious doubt. She prefers being outdoors, doesn’t like being held for too long, won’t sit in your lap when you want her to, claws or bites me at random, and only seems happy to see me when I get home in the afternoons because her food  bowl is ‘empty’. Still, we have our own little rituals, and I think when it comes to the dreary weather that personifies winter, she’s far more likely to act like a loving little thing.

That said, I will admit that she’s very intuitive. When I have to take home work in the evenings, she always comes to sit with me (or, rather, on my work). She seems to know when I need a bit of companionship, or a cuddle, and I am more than happy to oblige!

She was nowhere to be found when I was in bed with a migraine on Friday, but I won’t hold that against her 😉

Here are some photos of Smudgy indulging in some cuddling with me. Nothing says happiness like a warm kitty in your lap/by your side/stealing your pillow…

Snuggling into the crook of my arm while I read

Stretching on the couch

Holding onto my arm to snugly secure herself

Many times I think Smudgy prefers my Significant Other…

Taking a quick catnap – aren’t we adorable?

Stealing my pillow pre-cuddle – and I let her keep it! She sure gets away with a lot

More interested in cozying up next to me than watching Mythbusters

Taking a nap on my behalf after an aqua aerobics class. Just the thought of exercise makes Smudgy tired… not to mention all that water!

Cutest lap-cat EVER 🙂 Best way to stay warm on a cold night when a heating pad and mug of tea just won’t cut it.

Taking over my side of the bed last night. A cuddle session was inevitable. This is definitely one of my favourite photos of us.

No hope for me (aka the Kitty Proximation Intellligence Disruptor)

9 12 2011

Good morning, blog readers!

So, it’s Friday… again… and we’re nearly midway through December. Not sure if that’s a good or a ‘bad’ thing. This year truly has flown (yes, let’s start this entry off with a cliché, why not?). I’ve been back at OUP for over 6 months, married for 7 months, and gone through almost another full year without coffee.

A good, super awesome friend of mine (you know who you are, and you RULE!) told me yesterday that he had gotten my blog two more fans, which is great… though now I wish I sounded a bit more intelligent on my blog… and posted less LOLcats…

Alas, I fear that I have been a lost cause for some time now. Immediately after telling myself that I’d try to be more engaging/ interesting/ ‘smart’ on my blog yesterday, I had a Fail Moment that proves to me that it was but an idle hope.

You see, my cat, Smudgy – almost two years old now, what a cutie! – had walked into the bedroom (where my laptop is situated on a desk), meowed at me, then plonked herself down on the floor. One of her front paws was tucked underneath her body, making it look like she only had three paws. I started telling her what a silly little three-legged thing she is, et cetera (an “ou afpoot katjie”, for those who understand Afrikaans), and she just gave me this look saying: “You’re really talking to me like this? Seriously?” I then commenced to lie on the floor in front of her, and told her (yes, talking to my cat, indeed) that I know how stupid I’m being and that my intelligence was being affected by my proximity to her.

I am a prime example of what happens to (certain) humans when they are near a cat – a phenomenon which I shall call the Kitty Proximation Intelligence Disruptor [KPID]:

This is a FACT! ...as proven by myself, on occasion...

I even touched her nose when explaining this, and exclaimed “You’re a KITTY!” before laughing at myself (though not hysterically, I’ll add).

Craziness aside (probably shouldn’t mention that I took a bazillion pictures of her), I think I’m just a big cat lover. When I see a kitty, I get a smile on my face. Whether it’s on sites like I can has cheezburger or at our apartment complex, there’s something about these furry little critters that sets my heart aglow (I’m sharing a moment with you, don’t ruin it) 🙂 I feel so sorry for all the kitties that don’t have homes, that have been abused/ abandoned/ neglected, that walk the streets and don’t know where their next meal is coming from… And that makes me love Smudgy even more, and I try hard to take good care of her.

In a rare moment of what can only be termed surrender for a cat, she allowed me to pick her up – one of her obvious dislikes – and even have her picture taken! Granted, she meowed before and after the picture was taken (I bugged my Significant Other while he was working), yet I think it came out quite nice. It even looks like she was posing!

Truth be told, she looks bigger to me in the photo than she actually is in real life (maybe because I’m short and ‘small’, though this isn’t a very flattering photo of me, I look ‘fat’ to myself). Now that she’s lost her collar – again – she has become even more of a ninja: creeping in the shadows, moving silently, remaining undetected and appearing in front of you with the blink of an eye. I think she enjoys it 😉

Anyway, let me not bore you more with rambling about how cute and furry and vocal and silly my cat is. Let me instead wish you all a great Fried-day, with as little stress or worries as possible, and then get us in a Feel Good mood by inviting Business Cat to take the floor. Take care!

Stupidity…

9 11 2011

In this glorious state of existence known as life, it is an irrefutable fact that each and every individual will suffer from bouts of stupidity from time to time.

Some individuals, however, are more susceptible than others… and cannot refrain from doing the same stupid things/ making the same (incredibly) stupid mistakes over and over again.

It is not my place to point an accusing finger (or shake my head in disappointment, for that matter) at particular repeat offenders, yet I shall make use of this occasion to express my emotions through the wonderful medium of LOLcats 🙂

Like Einstein said: “Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I’m not sure about the former.”

Hope you’re all having a marvellous Whensday/ Hump-Day!

Bee with an itch

3 11 2011

I’m still in a foul mood, though for other reasons than yesterday… or was it the day before that? No, wait, it was on Tuesday (though I wouldn’t put it past this odious state to carry through until the weekend).

Whatever the case may be, it’s Meh-day, so perhaps my disposition is merely keeping pace.

Before I came to work this morning, I noticed that a friend of mine (a witty/ funny/ sarcastic, i.e. swell, guy) tweeted the following:

“So November 3rd is both Housewife Day and International Sandwich Day. Coincidence? I think n– *is stabbed by the closest woman*”

This immediately made me think of the following picture:

To keep the proverbial good times rolling (sarcastic face), I’ve decided to share my mood with you visually. Hope you enjoy the pictures below and have an amazing splendid good moderately okay bearable Meh-day.

[PS: My older sister, Libby, says that we must be having a psychic connection or something this week, since my mood mirrors hers. Perhaps it is genetic!]

[PPS: Betty Bright brought me a budvase brimming with lavender this morning. So far it hasn’t calmed me, though I am in a state of tranquil, composed antagonism.]

Almost Meowloween

28 10 2011

Good morning, blog readers

I hope you’ve all been having a good week 🙂

It’s the weekend before Halloween (note: shops have had Christmas decorations out since the end of September), and although we don’t really ‘celebrate’ it here in South Africa (the trick-or-treat part, that is – lots of people hold Halloween parties), I’ve wanted to post some Meowloween LOLcats all week long. Work, however, had other plans for me…

But now it’s Friday/ Fried-day, and I don’t want to put off getting everybody in the spirit (yes, that’s intentional) of things.

I myself will be dressing up as a black cat for a Meowloween Halloween party we are attending tomorrow night (though all I want to do is get some rest 😦 At least my costume is Caturday approved!!) My Significant Other thinks that my costume idea is ‘boring’ *throws small hissy-fit* but I have the ears, tail, and attire/ cosmetics to put my ‘costume’ together. He can worry about finding himself a costume (perhaps a mafia boss/ vampire/ zombie? – zombie would be AWESOME!) while I try to come up with some creepy cookies & cupcakes.

So here, for your end-of-the-week pleasure, I present to you: kittehs ‘n pumpkins!

Keep calm…

13 10 2011

It’s Meh-day again, everyone!

And you all know what that means: it’s one day closer to Friday (Fried-day) and the weekend – happiness all around 🙂

So amid the stress, frustration, slight panic and lacklustre wanting-to-give-up feelings you might (read: probably will) be dealing with today at work/ home/ school/ where ever, let’s all just try to keep calm and make the best of it.

Here are a few ‘Keep Calm’ posters (I grouped everything together into one image) to brighten up your day… and bring in a bit of humour/ silliness!!

Sunday lunch for the Parentals

11 10 2011

I love doing special things for other people – especially when it comes to my parentals.

My Significant Other and I (i.e. little old me) decided to invite the parentals for lunch/ dinner at our apartment last weekend. We initially had it set for Sunday evening, but due to ‘scheduling’, we moved it out to Sunday afternoon.

Cue myself worrying about what to serve… I’m obsessive-compulsive like that *laugh*

You have to understand: until a few months ago, we didn’t have (a) decent couches or, more importantly, (b) a dining room table. The parentals recently bought themselves a new car – did I ever tell you how some stupid girl rammed into their old car, wrecked it, and that they didn’t get much out of it? – so the fact that they now had their own transport made it even more ‘necessary’ for us to finally have them over for a meal.

The weather has been a bit strange over here. It’s supposed to be Spring, yet it’s only starting to warm up now – venturing between cold (about 15 degrees Celsius) for a few days, then uncomfortably hot (for me, at least, at 32 degrees Celsius) the next. This weekend was sunny, with the heat making me feel exceptionally headachy, and not really helping to keep the apartment at an acceptable temperature since I was busy cookin’ in the kitchen… But I survived. The fan helped to cool things off a bit… And at the end of the meal I ditched the dress I was wearing in favour of short shorts and a t-shirt 😉

We had a great afternoon, with plenty of feel good moments and happiness all around!

So, here’s what was on the menu – it wasn’t a five-star meal (definitely not the most impressive dishes), but it was very nice:

STARTER

– Pastry ‘bowls’ with sautéed mushrooms (my mum doesn’t eat mushrooms, so I made hers with a cherry tomato, bacon & yellow pepper filling instead)

MAIN COURSE

– Homemade rolls

– Roasted green beans

– Marinated chicken breasts

– Garden salad (incl. baby potatoes + bacon)

DESSERT

– Fruit cocktail

– Jelly (made in silicone cupcake moulds)

– Mini, star-shaped vanilla sponge cakes

– Chocolate mousse with sliced strawberries

[I made/ baked the pastry ‘bowls’, rolls and mini cakes myself!]

Pretty flowers to brighten up the table - my Significant Other bought them for me

The 'spread', excluding dessert

Starter: pastry bowl with sautéed mushrooms

Starter: pastry bowl with cherry tomatoes, bacon + yellow pepper

Homemade rolls... which had more of a scone-like consistency... oh well

A nice salad 🙂 My Significant Other's contribution to preparing the entire meal? De-shelling the hardboiled eggs...

Roasted green beans. Sorry the pic's a bit blurry

Grilled chicken breasts & baby potatoes

Desssert: fruit cocktail, jelly, choc mousse & strawberries. I forgot to add the star cakes to the plates...

This is how the dessert was supposed to look -- I took this pic yesterday

My Significant Other & my mum

My dad! ...and me, of course...
