Friday with Business Cat (10)

13 07 2012

Happy Friday the 13th, everyone!

I hope your day has been off to a good start and that the superstition bug hasn’t bitten any of you. I for one am going to seek out the little black kitty who lives in our apartment complex (not knowing his name, I’m torn between dubbing him either ‘Blackie’ or ‘Shadow’) and give him plenty of affection.

And since it is Friday and I feel you need to get a dose of some black cat feel good vibes on this the 13th, Business Cat has graciously agreed to help kick off the weekend by putting a smile on your faces. (Is it working?)

Well, there’s that, plus the fact that I’ve had some requests for more Business Cat pics – seems like his presence has been sorely missed šŸ˜‰

Have a wonderful workday and weekend, everyone!

Happy (or should that be lucky?) Friday the 13th!

13 04 2012

Morning, readers

And happy Friday the 13th! *cue eerie music*

But don’t worry, there’s no reason to hide under the covers and lay trembling in fear until the Day of Bad Luck is finally over.

It’s not like a psychotic serial killerĀ is going to spontaneously appear out of nowhere at the exact location you find yourself and start picking you & those around you off one-by-one until someone miraculously comes up with a ‘plan’ to save the day… with said personĀ  being the sole survivor… and all of this only happeningĀ at nightĀ (I’d argue that the last man standing was the killer to begin with, but oh well…) See – nothing to worry about! *shifts uncomfortably in seat*

Have you ever taken the time to think about how utterly silly superstitions are?

ManyĀ superstitionsĀ we hear or read about todayĀ are rooted in mythology or cameĀ into existenceĀ because something bad happened to someone and they needed to find an explanation/scape-goat/excuse for it – no matter how ridiculous it might sound. The word ‘superstition’Ā means stand(ing) over, perhaps in awe of or as the survivor/witness of something. It is “a notion maintained despite evidence to the contrary” (not everyone who comes across a black cat, cuts their nails/hair, walks under a ladder, etc.Ā Ā on Friday the 13th has bad luck…and what is luck anyway but another sort of superstition?);Ā “a belief or practice resulting from ignorance, fear of the unknown, trust in magic or chance, or a false conception of causation.”

So sure, let’s all blame our problems on Friday the 13th. Anything unfortunate that happens to you before then can be explained as a build-up to the actual day… and then, depending on the amount of misfortune, you could argue that you had suffered enough and that’s why you were ‘spared’ any misfortune on the day itself *roll eyes*

Anyone else hearing how ridiculous this sounds?

Okay, another example:Ā If there are thirteen letters in your name, you will have ‘the devil’s luck’. Really? Isn’t this just people/society trying to find a reason why some people do terrible things? Like Jack the Ripper (not even a real name), Charles Manson & Theodore Bundy? [Notice how all of them are men? And even if the same applies to women, would that be with their maiden name or does your married name, i.e. surname change, count?] Why can’t people accept that there are truly horrible people in the world who make their own sick decisions and that they cannot blame an invisible force (like the devil, who not everyone believes in) so that they at least feel better about mankind?

Anyway, let’s not get into the whole ‘God needs the Devil toĀ prove that he isĀ good’ PARADISE LOST discussion. The fact of the matter is, anything can be bad if you make a point of believing that it really is. Watch THE NUMBER 23. Or start believing that not colour-coordinating your wardrobe and organizing your drawers will lead to unspeakable things *cue eerie music again*

Enough rambling for one morning. Let’s all go hug a black cat, not care about stepping on cracks in the sidewalk, and only feel anxious about the long, nearly impossible to pronounce names for the fear of Friday the 13th: friggatriskaidekaphobiaĀ and paraskevidekatriaphobia.

And if you stillwant to go ahead and feel superstitious, I can only quote THE HUNGER GAMES and say: “May the odds be ever in your favour.”

So I turned 25…

10 04 2012

I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter filled with love, laughter, happiness… and chocolate… or whatever šŸ˜‰

Our weekend started off with a near-literal bang. My Significant Other’s car gave problems on Thursday, thus necessitating that (a) he take it in to be looked at, and (b) I work from home. Not the worst thing to happen… although we then found out they’d be ordering the new parts for his car after Easter weekend, and that the parts would only arrive on Thursday *huff*

But despite being carless for two days, a bit of family ‘drama’, borrowing my brother-in-law’s noisy little Golf from Saturday to Monday (and much, muchĀ more!), we managed to have a great weekend.

When it was just after midnight and ‘officially’ my birthday, Smudgy woke me up about 6 or 8 times. I think she was grumpy/frustrated that it was cold and wet outside and she didn’t know what to do about it since she obviously really wanted to be outside, but I’d like to think that she was being affectionate and excited about my birthday.

Here’s a basic rundown of my day: lemon & poppyseed muffin (sans candles, sinceĀ my Significant OtherĀ couldn’t find any) plus a warm mug of tea in bed; a visit from my parentals and younger sister Addy, with gifts and a suprise; tea, cupcakes and gift opening; lunch at Ocean basket with my Significant Other, parentals and sis; curling up on the sofa under a blanket with my Significant Other and watching series;Ā dinner at theĀ HildebrandĀ (V&A Waterfront) – so fancy and romantic šŸ˜‰

Exquisite orange roses from my Sweetheart

Lindt chocolate bunny! This little guy has been in the kitchen cupboard for a few weeks already

Pretty little forks to aid in the cosumption of treats

Smudgy was trying to escape/go outside when I snatched her up for a photo with her mommy

Addy baked birthday cupcakes! I had to assemble the stand myself - it was part of the 'fun'

Addy & the parentals baked me a super awesome Scooby-Doo birthday cake! šŸ˜€

All my gifts assembled on the livingroom table

Sushi for two: my Significant Other and I decided to share a Rising Sun sushi platter and added extra salmon roses & rainbow rolls. Mmm, sushi...

Such a happy couple! Ready to head out for dinner

Here Smudgy's more accepting of having her picture taken. She even struck a pose for the camera! Isn't she just the loveliest little thing?

Taking a nap on daddy's jeans after we arrived home ā¤

PS: Did I mention that we went to watch THE HUNGER GAMES last night??! *happy dance*

Let’s cancel today

30 03 2012

I donā€™t know why I bothered getting out of bed this morning.

I woke up at 05:30, decided to stay in bed until 06:00ā€¦ and then realized, hey, the powerā€™s out! Look outside ā€“ all the streetlights and traffic lights are off, as well. At least I knew that we werenā€™t the only ones affected. I lighted some candles, stumbled around Smudgy (who was really affection, purring, allowing me to pick her up and carry her around while petting her), got ready for work, and then spent half an hour trying to get my Significant Other out of bed.

I arrived at work at 07:30. I couldnā€™t disarm the section of the building I work in because it wouldnā€™t accept my code (again). I had to hang around in the reception area for a few minutes until someone who has the authority to disarm and enter any section was able to do it for me. Walk into our section, switch on all the lights, get my computer up and runningā€¦ And the office is a ghost town. Thereā€™s nobody else but me for the next 40 minutes.

By this time Iā€™ve sorted out my desk, gone through e-mails, checked what I need to do for the day, and still sit wishing that I could be in bed sleeping/ reading a book ā€“ weā€™re having such cold, rainy weather, after all, and I love it.

Our offices are closing at 12:00 today. Thatā€™s three & a half hours from now. Just enough time to start kind-of-sort-of-maybe getting into my work, not feel in the mood to do it, keep wishing I were reading instead, and sit browsing memes until itā€™s time to leave. This could turn out to be a highly unproductive day (which could either make me feel extremely guilty or highly indifferent).

So yes, I think it would have been a good idea to just cancel today and skip over to the weekend ā€“ a sentiment I am sure many people will agree with.

Have an amazingĀ Fried-day, readers! xx

Friday with Business Cat (9)

2 12 2011

Another visit from Business Cat has been long overdue!! It’s been nearly two full months since he’s popped around to make us all feel good while we’re all sitting at work, waiting for the weekend (although he did pop round in a recent blog post of mine… poor thing looked quite defeated!)

This week has been super duper crazy busy. I’ve been working non-stop for three days (the second day, i.e. Wednesday, was particularly ‘rough’), which is probably why yesterday felt like a Friday. Today I have a meeting at 15:30 – unlucky me – and I’ve been here since 07:43… which means that it’s going to be another looong day.

But never fear! Business Cat is going to put a smile our your face and help you see the lighter side of office tedium, then launch us all into what will hopefully be a restful weekend.

Have a great Fried-day, everyone!

Busy times

25 11 2011

Good morning you happy little campers you!

It’s hard to believe that it’s Fried-dayĀ again… and in one month’s time, it’ll be Christmas! šŸ˜€

Things are pretty busy here at work, and up until the end of February/ beginning of March, their only going to get exponentially busier! It’s exciting to see a book through from the planning stage right until the end, but the deadline we’re working with is crazy (nature of the industry). On the plus side, it’s allowing me to build on my efficiency and prove to the company what an asset I am *hint-hint* Still, after long days and weeks of juggling 20 different things and having to put up with the Department of Education’s undecidedness, it’s enough to spur on the madness (I was going to say it’ll drive you mad, but we’re all mad here). You know there’s no hope for you when you send your line manager an e-mail saying “We should all put on our thinking CAPS (yes, pun intended) about this”… CAPS being the new curriculum document that is inĀ a limbo state ofĀ Final-final-final-final-final (but not actually yet final) version *sigh*

Ah, Business Cat, I know how you feel...

Today, for your viewing pleasure,Ā I’ll be sharing aĀ few pictures of what has been keeping me busy/ amusing me during the last two weeks. My Significant Other has already tried to outright bribe me into letting us test drive a car (that he isn’t going to buy, according to him) tomorrow morning. I told him that he doesn’t need to bribe me, that we’re inĀ a partnership… but perhaps IĀ should let him sweat a bit. He’ll have to find something pretty darn good to coax me with šŸ˜‰

Have a superb day and gloooorious weekend, dearest readers! I’ve already been commissioned to bake cookies & cake for our Monday meeting (i.e. work), so that’s a bit of ‘fun’ lined up for my Sunday.

This is a picture from one of our Foundation Phase (i.e. Gr 1 - 3) books. My Significant Other always says he wants a fat cat, which is why I couldn't resist sharing this picture with him

From an illustrated school dictionary. My S.O. complains that he's (getting) fat, which is why this pic's so funny to me. Here's hoping he doesn't become so rotund & 'grumpy'... Oh, wait, too late for the 'grumpies'!!

The new Stephen King novel (aaaah!!) - had to wait nearly a week before it was available in SA, but it was worth it

Look how happy I am! Long live Stephen King ā¤

We went to visit my S.O.'s uncle & aunt, where we met their new kitty, La Scala. Cutie!

After weeks of sitting with a computer that would spontaneously freeze & switch off, they FINALLY got me a new one: box, screen, keyboard & mouse... The screen is bigger, plus it has Windows7 on. Nice

In times of stress, keep calm & eat a cupcake! I baked these myself

Dinosaur cake for my brother-in-law's birthday... & no, its name is NOT Barney

Smudgy and I have been having nice cuddly times/ moments of affection this week. Fills my heart with joy & love ā¤

I've been watching a LOT of Nyan Cat videos on YouTube this week - sad, I know... Need to get myself this scarf!

Mood modification

4 11 2011

So the last few days my disposition has been quite on the negative (read: very angry) side. This has left me feeling a bit drained, moody, listless in the evenings, and put off when it comes to the intake of sustenance (i.e. food).

Since nobody likes a grumble buns, I’m going to get rid of this face:

…by doing the following (or at least try my very best to):

…and then attempt to feel/ lookĀ like this today:

At the moment – note the time, 10:10 in the AM – things are goingĀ rather well… Although I’m going to have to be pretty careful and watch myself, since I noted (to my despair) that I have a meeting with my manager until 5PM.

Greek Gods, this is going to be a loooong Fried-day…

So blog readers: what do YOU suggest I should do to get into a better mood?

[PS: One thing that can definitely raise my spirits is the fact that the new Stephen King novel is being released next Tuesday!!!!]
