Time to celebrate

7 08 2012

So despite the fact that I’ve spent four hours of the working day in meetings and have been assisting on other people’s titles (can I help if I’m efficient & eager to help out? I like keeping busy), I’m feeling very much like this LOLcat:

And why might that be, you ask? Well, perhaps it has something to do with the fact that I wrote my learners licence test this morning and passed with 100% 😀

Now there’s just the matter of buying myself a small car and (re-)learning how to drive… oh, and getting over my overwhelming FEAR of driving, of course. Really big hurdle, that. Just thinking about it causes my palms to sweat a little bit *nervous twitch* I would strongly advise you to reconsider ever getting into a vehicle with me when I’m the driver… unless you don’t place great value on your life/ mental health… or if you’re a thrill seeker who enjoys life-threatening events 😉

In all earnest, though, I’m rather excited at the prospect of being independent. When in the unfortunate situation of being caught in traffic, it’ll present me with a sort of ‘window of opportunity’ to channel any anger/frustration I may have experienced that day while also providing a ‘safe space’ where I can timeously contemplate my murders… There’s an upside to everything, right?! Perspective sure is a refreshing thing…

Scattered Brainings XVI

27 07 2012

* Anyone else have a routine they follow when they first arrive at work? For me, it’s simple: I go through my e-mails, have a mug of tea… and have a look at some comics & memes on my favourite sites. It only takes about 5 minutes, if that, which makes me feel a little less guilty about going onto these sites in the first place. At least I’m a diligent worker for the rest of the day.

* Smudgy might be against healthy snacking. Why else would she steal the apple I wanted to take along to work from the kitchen counter… twice? Oh, wait, that’s right – (a) it was small enough to be considered a toy, and (b) she’s a cat, so she does whatever she wants. Like sleeping on my brand new coat before I even wear it.

* Not having drowned thus far during aqua aerobics feels like a great accomplishment to me. Yeay exercise!

* I know you’re supposed to feel flattered when people think you’re younger than you really are. I’m just wondering at what point in your life this is supposed to be complementary and when the guesstimated difference is a bit too extreme or even astonishing. The women in my aqua aerobics class thought I was only 15 or 16 years old! (I’m told it’s because I’m so small & ‘skinny’.) Now imagine their expressions when they hear that I’m married and how old I actually am. The shock value / surprised faces are really quite amusing.

* The weather is cold, and for the past week I’ve been wearing not-really-heat-inducing jerseys at work with the sleeves rolled up because I feel warm & semi-claustrophobic. I’m too young to be getting hot flashes, right?

* Pink macaroons taste like Bakers Zoo Cookies. If you live in South Africa, go buy one at a Limnos Bakery and tell me I’m wrong. They are awesome!

* We’re watching the second season of GAME OF THRONES at the moment. While interesting, I can’t help but want to groan in joint despair and annoyance when we have to see another person’s naked form and all that hoo-ha. Get on with the story already!

* Also, has anyone else joked that Jon Snow and Samwell Tarly are like Frodo Baggins & Samwise Gamgee in LOTR? Come one: Samwell – Samwise? Both a bit portly, well-meaning, supportive and a true friend? Jon and Frodo each with their own type of burdens to bear and roles to fulfil / adventures to go on? No? Just me, then…

* Is it weird that I find it weird that people don’t think it’s weird to have a whole conversation while in cubicles/stalls at a public/work restroom? Weird.

Friday with Business Cat (10)

13 07 2012

Happy Friday the 13th, everyone!

I hope your day has been off to a good start and that the superstition bug hasn’t bitten any of you. I for one am going to seek out the little black kitty who lives in our apartment complex (not knowing his name, I’m torn between dubbing him either ‘Blackie’ or ‘Shadow’) and give him plenty of affection.

And since it is Friday and I feel you need to get a dose of some black cat feel good vibes on this the 13th, Business Cat has graciously agreed to help kick off the weekend by putting a smile on your faces. (Is it working?)

Well, there’s that, plus the fact that I’ve had some requests for more Business Cat pics – seems like his presence has been sorely missed 😉

Have a wonderful workday and weekend, everyone!

Change is a good thing… right?

4 06 2012

So what’s been going on in my life since the last time I blogged, you ask?

I’ve read eight books, done freelance work, gone for a job interview, celebrated Mother’s Day and my father’s birthday, found out I got the job, taken lots of photos of Smudgy, baked goodies for a colleague’s birthday, been to the emergency room with my Significant Other, watched a lot of Mythbusters, started using Herbalife products, gone on leave, joined a gym (or “health club”, if you want to get all fancy about it), obsessively cleaned the kitchen from top to bottom… you know, just your run-of-the-mill kind of stuff. Nothing major.

I am extremely excited about my new job as an Editor at OUPSA! At the moment it’s pretty much the same as my old Project Management position, but I am now permanently employed at such a phenomenal publishing house, thus it only seems logical to take pride in that (while, honestly, feeling a bit flattered as well).  ‘Editor’ sounds far more impressive/ fancy/ sophisticated/ important than Project Manager, right? Now it’s a whole new role for people to misunderstand! [I’ve already been asked, “oh, so you just sit and read books all day?” In schools publishing? Honestly? *sigh*]

The big change that’ll greatly affect my life is our Wellness Routine. I’m doing the shake thing in the morning for breakfast to support my Significant Other, who has to take a shake for breakfast, a shake for lunch, and then cut out carbs for supper (i.e. no bread, potatoes, rice, pasta, pizza, etc.) We had a Herbalife representative come talk to us and do an assessment nearly two weeks ago because my Significant Other generally hasn’t been feeling well. An improved diet to reactivate his metabolism plus partaking in exercise at least two to four times a week will help him to lose some of the weight he gained after he stopped smoking while also making him feel more energized.

And I, ever the good wife, have joined him in his quest for better wellness…

…which is how I ended up doing something I never thought I would: joining a gym. Tonight I get to make a fool of myself when we attend an aqua aerobics class. If I don’t die from embarrassment (in my one-piece and swimming cap), I might end up drowning myself in the pool. Not sure which one would be preferable.

Thus far things have been going great for my Significant Other. He says that, after just over a week, he already feels much better and can definitely get up easier in the morning (great relief for me, who has to struggle for 20 minutes to get Mr Grumpy-Pants out of bed, or at least awake enough to drink his coffee). I suppose I’m doing all right, as well. The only thing that bugs me is that my morning ‘shake’ – actually fat free plain yoghurt with raspberries, honey, mixed seeds and the vanilla shake powder – makes me ravenous. Not just hungry: all-out STARVING. And I am not someone who gets hungry often (if ever)!!

Another thing I’ve been wondering about is whether or not the shake powder is intensifying my headaches… it could be that or the yoghurt, since I’m not big on dairy products… I’m going to see how things go for a month, though I suspect I should just buckle down and go to the neurologist/headache clinic already. Except for the shake, my diet hasn’t really changed, which leads me to think that the increase in headache severity isn’t because of a detox effect on my body (note: I could be wrong).

At least the Wellness Routine gives me something new to be obsessive-compulsive about… except cats… and books… and cleaning… and and and 😉

Have a great week, everyone!

Some Christmas blog entries

19 12 2011

Well hullo, dearest blog readers!

I hope that you’ve all got your bells jingling and the halls decked, because there are only 5 more ‘sleeps’ until we hit Christmas Eve!

Many people are already on holiday (lucky them), but if you’re like me and still working until the last (which, for me, is Friday), then you don’t have to feel ‘ashamed’ if you haven’t been experiencing the feel-good spirit that the festive season is supposed to evoke. It still doesn’t feel like Christmas is around the corner. All I can think about is work, work, work…

I do have my tree up, though – that should count for something!! 😉

Small but suitable for our apartment

There's even an edible candycane on the tree!

Smudgy's very own stocking

Let's jingle some bells!

Ooh, shiny...

I spent last night baking some Christmas cookies while watching THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, so I’m sure that counts as getting in to the spirit of things… right? Now all I need to really get me going is to watch my favourite ‘Christmas’ movie: DIE HARD!

I know lots of people search for Christmas-related blog entries around this time, which is why I decided to share a few of my old entries that I thought you’d enjoy. I’ll see if I can find time to be cynical and get my “bah humbug” on before the 25th 😉

Yippee-ki-yay…

FESTIVE RAMBLINGS:

* It’s Christmas time

* Christmas: Fall Out Boy style

* Call me Cookie

* “Oh I’m the happiest Christmas tree…”

* Christmas carols with a twist

* Garfield – the 12 courses of dinner

* Christmas with South Park

* Christmas carols with LOLcats

* The 12 days of Christmas: Pokémon style

* Cartoon Christmas specials I grew up with

* Christmas sing-along with Garfield

* Holiday cheer?

No hope for me (aka the Kitty Proximation Intellligence Disruptor)

9 12 2011

Good morning, blog readers!

So, it’s Friday… again… and we’re nearly midway through December. Not sure if that’s a good or a ‘bad’ thing. This year truly has flown (yes, let’s start this entry off with a cliché, why not?). I’ve been back at OUP for over 6 months, married for 7 months, and gone through almost another full year without coffee.

A good, super awesome friend of mine (you know who you are, and you RULE!) told me yesterday that he had gotten my blog two more fans, which is great… though now I wish I sounded a bit more intelligent on my blog… and posted less LOLcats…

Alas, I fear that I have been a lost cause for some time now. Immediately after telling myself that I’d try to be more engaging/ interesting/ ‘smart’ on my blog yesterday, I had a Fail Moment that proves to me that it was but an idle hope.

You see, my cat, Smudgy – almost two years old now, what a cutie! – had walked into the bedroom (where my laptop is situated on a desk), meowed at me, then plonked herself down on the floor. One of her front paws was tucked underneath her body, making it look like she only had three paws. I started telling her what a silly little three-legged thing she is, et cetera (an “ou afpoot katjie”, for those who understand Afrikaans), and she just gave me this look saying: “You’re really talking to me like this? Seriously?” I then commenced to lie on the floor in front of her, and told her (yes, talking to my cat, indeed) that I know how stupid I’m being and that my intelligence was being affected by my proximity to her.

I am a prime example of what happens to (certain) humans when they are near a cat – a phenomenon which I shall call the Kitty Proximation Intelligence Disruptor [KPID]:

This is a FACT! ...as proven by myself, on occasion...

I even touched her nose when explaining this, and exclaimed “You’re a KITTY!” before laughing at myself (though not hysterically, I’ll add).

Craziness aside (probably shouldn’t mention that I took a bazillion pictures of her), I think I’m just a big cat lover. When I see a kitty, I get a smile on my face. Whether it’s on sites like I can has cheezburger or at our apartment complex, there’s something about these furry little critters that sets my heart aglow (I’m sharing a moment with you, don’t ruin it) 🙂 I feel so sorry for all the kitties that don’t have homes, that have been abused/ abandoned/ neglected, that walk the streets and don’t know where their next meal is coming from… And that makes me love Smudgy even more, and I try hard to take good care of her.

In a rare moment of what can only be termed surrender for a cat, she allowed me to pick her up – one of her obvious dislikes – and even have her picture taken! Granted, she meowed before and after the picture was taken (I bugged my Significant Other while he was working), yet I think it came out quite nice. It even looks like she was posing!

Truth be told, she looks bigger to me in the photo than she actually is in real life (maybe because I’m short and ‘small’, though this isn’t a very flattering photo of me, I look ‘fat’ to myself). Now that she’s lost her collar – again – she has become even more of a ninja: creeping in the shadows, moving silently, remaining undetected and appearing in front of you with the blink of an eye. I think she enjoys it 😉

Anyway, let me not bore you more with rambling about how cute and furry and vocal and silly my cat is. Let me instead wish you all a great Fried-day, with as little stress or worries as possible, and then get us in a Feel Good mood by inviting Business Cat to take the floor. Take care!

Friday with Business Cat (9)

2 12 2011

Another visit from Business Cat has been long overdue!! It’s been nearly two full months since he’s popped around to make us all feel good while we’re all sitting at work, waiting for the weekend (although he did pop round in a recent blog post of mine… poor thing looked quite defeated!)

This week has been super duper crazy busy. I’ve been working non-stop for three days (the second day, i.e. Wednesday, was particularly ‘rough’), which is probably why yesterday felt like a Friday. Today I have a meeting at 15:30 – unlucky me – and I’ve been here since 07:43… which means that it’s going to be another looong day.

But never fear! Business Cat is going to put a smile our your face and help you see the lighter side of office tedium, then launch us all into what will hopefully be a restful weekend.

Have a great Fried-day, everyone!
